1.2 The Challenge

By far the majority of stereo images have been displaying to date are computer generated images. These are artificial images that, while they may have been based or generated from real data (such as meteorological data), are created within the computer's artificial universe. As such, the idea behind this system is to combine the availability of stereo output devices and video input devices, creating a system that can use dual video cameras to provide a stereo input, coupled with a usual stereo output device.

Further, rather than an application supporting only this mode of stereo vision, a more general-purpose application is envisaged, which provides support for many different combinations of stereo input, output and processing. The application should also be extensible, to allow new types of input, output and processing to be added at any stage.
